Shells of oysters could become an attractive sweetener if combined with furniture. This is done by a juggling Mulyadi shells that do not waste valuable to increase sales of furniture. Not only sold domestically, furniture kerangnya also popular overseas markets.

Shellfish waste into something valuable if utilized properly. As performed Mulyadi with scallop shells turn waste into raw materials for furniture. Mulyadi said the idea of utilizing the shell started in 2005. "At first chance," he said.

He told me, when driving through the streets in the town of Jepara, Central Java, he saw a lot of oyster shell piles are thrown away by local residents. Mulyadi who was then living as craftsmen make furniture and then think about waste shells as a sweetener in its furniture products. He then tried to make the cap lamp box from the shell waste. Once finished, close the lights were deposited into a furniture company in Jepara.

No warning, after a month, Mulyadi contacted with orders 700 cap lamp shells. From there Mulyadi then developing new designs of shells of shellfish. He combines the scallop shell in the framework of furniture such as desks. Work as a furniture maker and carpenter to make him have the freedom in creating.

He decided to pursue the manufacture of furniture with scallop shells as accessories. Increased demand shells, making them have to bring in waste shells from Jepara, Surabaya, Madura, and Lampung. In one month it takes about 3 tons of shells for his workshop, Antika Lightnings in Jepara.

He bought clam shells at a price of Rp 3,000 to Rp 60,000 per kilogram. Prices depend on the type of shell oysters. After the clams arrived, he then
wash them thoroughly. Then the shells were separated according to size and shape. "Separated large and small, round and square," he said.

Shells will be used, not directly attached. Mulyadi should be cut with a saw according to the desired shape. After that, shells coated with powder coating to make it look shiny and textured hard. Once dry, the shells were then taped in the leg and body of the table. In addition to the table, shells are also mounted on chairs, cabinets, and mirrors, including made cap lamps. "Many consumers who say that the furniture add extra sweet with clams," said Mulyadi.

Not only as a sweetener, shells can be used as the main material of furniture. Only, still needed wood or plywood as a buffer for furniture stand strong. Mulyadi use teak, mahogany, and mango for furniture. The wood is imported from West Java and Central Java.

According to him, people like furniture that seem simple. If a portion of a taped shells larger than the timber, not much is ordered because it sounded too fancy.
Today, with 30 employees Antika Mulyadi Lightnings able to fulfill orders to make furniture living room, dining room, and bedroom. "Everything with accessories shells," he said. Mulyadi even launched a new design of a sofa, coffee table, kitchen cabinets, and TV cabinets.

A clam furniture sold at Rp 500,000 - Rp 2 million. If customers buy a set of parlor furniture, the prices start from U.S. $ 15 million. With a set that, buyers get a sofa, desk, TV cabinets, close to the mirror or lampshade.

Antique and interesting impression of the shells, making furniture orders received Mulyadi soaring. "Sometimes there are buyers who asked for 50 seeds. There is an order that cost Rp 5 million, there is USD 50 million, there is also a USD 300 million," he said. Within a month Mulyani able to send three containers of furniture shellfish. One container contains 400 lampshade.

Apart from within the country such as Jakarta and Bali, the purchase also comes from abroad such as Spain, the United States, Britain and Australia.
